Iranian Elections

Posted by Alan Stanley on Jun 11, 2009 in June '09

Iranians go to the polls tomorrow to vote on their presidential candidates. Will Ahmadinejad remain in power? A record turnout is expected. Many in Iran are seeking to reduce the invective being spewed by Ahmadinejad toward Israel and the West, and are understanding of the economic impact the current president is having. In recent weeks, Ahmadinejad’s  rhetoric has centered around Iran being “a grown up” and a world player. Yet, ecomomically speaking, his administration has failed to improve their economy while dumping huge sums of money into nuclear capability. No one is predicting how the elections will turn out. But, we’ll know in about 24 hours.

When pigs can fly. A statement usually made when one wants to make a point about “never”. But, this pig can fly. H1N1 Swine Flu is flying around the world at a record pace: 74 countries since first surfacing in Mexico. WHO today, at an emergency meeting, elevated the pandemic rating to six, the highest level. You know all the precautions to take, so take them.

Like the RCMP (The Mounties), the FBI eventually gets their man. Only in this instance it was their own man, sorta. On June 8, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. was named by the head of the FBI as honorary special agent. Zimbalist, Jr. played FBI Inspector Louis Erskine in the TV series “The FBI” which aired 1964-75. Thirty-four years, but better late than never.

Gitmo detainees are being disbursed … whether funds approved by our Congress or not. A total of 7 detainees have been moved: 4 to Bermuda, one to the US of A for trial, one to each of their countries, Iraq and Chad. Is the world safer by letting these and the 232 remaining detainees loose into the public domain? I think not.

On a positive note: This from The Canadian Press via AOL’s gnn.com, “(June 10) — Two paintings dropped off at a Goodwill store in Toronto by an anonymous donor have sold for over $150,000 combined at an auction Tuesday. The works were created in the 19th century by late Peruvian artists Federico del Campo. An anonymous phone bidder paid $80,700 for one painting and $78,400 for the other, including the buyer’s premium, according to a report by The Canadian Press.

Blessings.
