Senator Reid A Bigot?

Posted by Alan Stanley on Jan 11, 2010 in January '10

What’s catching my eye today?

The Reps are up in arms over D-Senator Harry Reid - oh, BTW, Senate Majority Leader, being quoted in a book regarding now Prez, then Candidate Obama, as describing the Illinois senator as a “light-skinned” African-American “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”The Dems think this is ok because Reid is a “fine gentleman” and he apologized (after the book was published) directly to Prez O himself. Prez O graciously accepted the apology and expressed a desire to “close the book on this one”. Oh boy! Being a Conservative, I’d like to get all huffy along with the Reps, but I can’t. I also didn’t agree with the Dem treatment of Senator Trent Lott in 2002. Get over it, folks! The voters will decide next year.

Pope Benedict XVI, the “green” pope, denounced world leaders for failing to reach accords in Copenhagen last month, saying that world peace depends on our husbandry of God’s creation. The pontiff said the same “self-centered and materialistic” way of thinking that sparked the worldwide financial meltdown was also endangering creation. To combat it will require a new way of thinking and a new lifestyle—and an acknowledgment that the question is a moral one, he said. File this under “Please don’t throw me in the briar patch.” Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Barak said yesterday the Israel’s “Iron Dome” missile defense system would not be fully operational “for years”. Sounds exactly like B’rer Rabbit to me.

According to a survey by PNC Wealth Management, the recession has caused a significant number of America’s wealthy to re-evaluate their lifestyles. Nearly nine out of 10 (88 percent) believe it is “more important than ever to live within my means” and two-thirds (66 percent) believe they have “developed a greater appreciation for the non-material wealth in my life.” While the rest of us have been operating there for EVer, it is interesting to me that the wealthy (defined as having investable funds over $500k) have just now arrived, having been escorted there by the recession. I say, anything which brings people back to ground is a good thing.

On this day in history: 1775 - Francis Salvadore, the “Southern Paul Revere”, becomes the first person of Jewish heritage to be named to a Congressional post (S.C.); 1908 - Prez Teddy Roosevelt designates the Grand Canyon National Park;  1989 - Prez Ronald Reagan gives farewell address

On a positive note: Nathan Acker, of Gorham, Maine, USA, has delivered his 10,000th meal to shut-ins. Volunteering every Wednesday since 1987, Acker  - 88 years old - has no plans for slowing down. Good on you, Nathan … um … er … MR. Acker.

Blessings.
