Haitian Tragedy

What’s catching my eye today:

Horrible tragedy in Haiti. Do your part to help, even if your part is only to pray for the wounded and for the families who will bear the loss of loved ones and for the volunteers who will be hungry and tired and not get thanked properly.

Michelle Obama made a big splash last March when she promoted the planting of her White House garden. Trouble is, during the Clinton administration, sewage sludge fertilizer was the rage and was used. The garden has been declared toxic - unfit for human consumption. Is this a living metaphor for Health Care?

High-ranking Dems (Steny Hoyer today) are bragging that they’re near a compromise between the House and Senate and that the final (except for some details) version of a Bill would be forthcoming shortly. This version will be the one, ostensibly, which the two Congresses will debate. Based upon all the kvetching by parties in both Congresses, I’m not certain that there is enough arm-twisting or concession-giving to be done in order to get this thing passed by Feb. Prez O wants to brag at the State of the Union address. I think that the Bill itself, the philosophies behind the Bill and the fact that it is being effected strictly by Dems is all wrong. Just wrong. Oh, there are a few things which should be included. If you want to impact (read government-control) things, institute medical tort reform, provide a special insurance program for those with pre-existing conditions, allow prescription drugs to be purchased from Canada and Mexico (we get most of our oil from them already) and leave the rest alone.

The current Administration’s view that government can make America tick is so wrong. It’s Americans who make America tick. Let us alone to do our jobs. Give us tax breaks to stimulate our businesses so we can hire back those employees we laid off.  Free market will dictate the rest. It’s the way we get things done.

On this day in history: 1777 - Green Mountain (New Connecticut) (Vermont) declares its independence from British rule; 1870 - Donkey used to portray Dems; 1967 - Packers beat Chiefs in first Super Bowl

On a positive note: Mukul Asaduzzaman, a NY City cab driver, found $21k in a purse in his back seat. A note inside had an address 50 miles away. He returned the purse, the money and refused a reward. “When I was 5 years old, my mother told me, ‘Be honest, work hard and you will raise your station,’ ” Good on you … and your mother, Mukul!

Blessings.
