Good-bye, Senator

Posted by Alan Stanley on Aug 31, 2009 in August '09

Good-bye to Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy, D-MA, as he departs on the next leg of his journey. Although his ideologies were far-left, still they drove him to be a champion for the less fortunate, and for that we should be thankful. Wishing his family and friends peace in this time of sorrow.

BTW, the flak in the media about Social Security recipients’ payments being decreased is a non-starter and mis-information.  All Social Security recipients are covered for free under Medicare Part B, covering hospital and catastrophic care, and most elect to be covered under Part A, doctor care. Part A costs $96.40 per month, so it is NOT FREE. (Prescription drug coverage is a for-fee option)  And, the premium is going UP next year while there is talk that the (avg. 3%) COLA will be suspended for the next two years. Premium increase/no COLA mean that the net effect on SS payouts is a decrease.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, slammed the media for paying too much attention to the “rowdy” town hall meetings. Hmmm … If the shoe were on the other foot and the town hall meetings were supporting the Dems, would he complain that they weren’t giving enough coverage? You can count on it. Politics is a dirty business.

“Hedgehogs — why can’t they just share the hedge?” Did you get it yet? A panel of critics and comedy fans evaluated thousands of jokes at this year’s Edinburgh [Scotland] Fringe Festival before awarding the Funniest Joke prize to Dan Antopolski. On this day in history: 1897 – Edison patents the Kinetograph; 1955 - Cobb demonstrates first solar-powered car; 1957 – Last episode of Kukla, Fran and Ollie airs

On a positive note: 17 year old Mike Perham became the youngest person to complete a solo trip around the world – all 28,000 miles – as he crossed the “finish” line in Cornwall, England. Good on you, Mike!

Blessings.
