First 100 Days
Prez O’s “First 100 Days” press conference last night is sure to stir lots of buzz. Here is one quote, out of context: “If, on the other hand, the definition [of bi-partisanship] is that we’re open to each other’s ideas, there are going to be differences, the majority will probably be determinative when it comes to resolving just hard, core differences that we can’t resolve, but there is a whole host of other areas where we can work together, then I think we can make progress.” So, the majority party gets to enforce their ideologies, while the minority party gets to “work together” on the lesser issues. FoxNews has the transcript. Go here: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/first100days/2009/04/29/raw-data-presidential-news-conference/
News Agency Reuters tells us that: “Twenty-five U.S. senators from both parties on Tuesday proposed giving President Obama new leverage for stopping Tehran from going nuclear: the authority to sanction companies that export gasoline to Iran.” Estimates are that up to 40% of Iran’s oil is imported. Sanctioning oil companies that do currently do business with both the US of A and Iran would be given a choice to do business with our $13tr economy or Iran’s $250bn economy. The Senators are thinking that the choice will be easy.
Is it or isn’t it? That’s the question about swine flu. Janet Napolitano, Homeland Security Secretary, urged the press to drop the swine flu moniker and use instead, “H1N1”, the scientific designation for this strain of flu. Why? The scare is affecting the pork, corn and soybean industries cuz consumers have sworn off pork. So, while we’re urging people not to panic and are concerned about our pork industry, Egypt has ordered ALL pigs in Egypt slaughtered. Wow!
On a positive note: We, in the US of A, have the best taxation program in the world. I join Derek Hunter of www.atr.org in congratulating the actor Sir Michael Caine. Sez Mr. Hunter: “The ‘we couldn’t have said it better ourselves’ award goes to Sir Michael Caine who, at the prospect of the top tax rate in Great Britain rising to 50 percent, said this: ‘We’ve got 3.5 million layabouts on benefits, and I’m 76, getting up at 6am to go to work to keep them. Let’s get everybody back to work so we can save a couple of billion and cut tax, not keep sticking it up.’ Does this strike a chord with anyone?
Blessings.
